Since regular trips to the spa can get expensive, why not turn your bathroom into a home spa? Whether your bathroom is large or small, it can be given the spa treatment and turned into a place where you can kick back and relax.
Turning your bathroom into a home spa can involve a major renovation, but it does not have to. Simple upgrades to your shower and/or bathtub, cleaning out the clutter, and improving the lighting can help you achieve a spa-like atmosphere at home.
Shower and/or Bathtub
The best way to turn your bathroom into a home spa is by building a custom tiled shower and/or installing a soaker bathtub with built in jets.
If it is not in the budget or you do not want to go through the hassle of replacing your shower or bathtub, you can mimic the spa atmosphere for your home bathroom by swapping out the showerhead or adding a portable spa jets system. Massage showerheads are available, as are rainfall/waterfall, multi-function, handheld, and dual showerheads. Select a showerhead that suits your preferences and needs. Shower panels with multiple heads are also available. Steam generators can also be hooked up to your shower to create a home sauna.
Color
If your bathroom is on the smaller size, you can create the illusion of space by painting the walls a neutral color. Because bright white walls can create an institutional look, go with an off-white or a light beige, blue, gray, or green. Light colors make the room appear bigger while also creating a feeling of being in an oasis. Also go with a white ceiling and light-colored flooring.
Dark colors will make a room appear smaller, and bold colors and accents (such as towels and shower curtains) will take away from the home spa feel.
No Clutter
Calm and clutter do not go together. Keep the essentials (hand soap, body wash, etc.) on hand, and reduce the clutter by storing everything else in a medicine cabinet, vanity or a closet. Decorative containers and baskets can also help control the clutter. If your current bathroom has minimal storage, you might want to consider adding additional storage options during a remodel.
Lighting
If possible, include natural lighting in your home spa. A large or small window can let in natural light that will affect the look and feeling of the room. Just make sure that you have a window covering or opaque glass for privacy.
As for artificial lighting, stay away from fluorescent lighting since it is harsh and will detract from the room’s calm atmosphere.
Natural Elements
Keeping with the spa look, be sure to include natural elements. Faux wood and stone countertops and sinks are available. And pebbles can be used on the shower floor or as backsplash at the sink.
House plants and flowers will add color and fresh air to the bathroom.
Accessories
Turning your bathroom into a home spa would not be complete without accessories. Be sure to include a towel warmer, a bath tray/caddy, and fluffy towels and rugs. Aromatherapy (candles, incense, essential oils, etc.) can also boost relaxation and relieve stress, making it the perfect oasis.
