Solid surface countertops are man-made through the combination of acrylics and/or polyester resins with filler material. The filler material is usually mineral dust and pigments. Some of the minerals are marble, bauxite derivative, and aluminium trihydrate (ATH). ATH is a fine material that assists with creating a smooth surface. The ratio of resin to minerals is typically around 33/66 percent.
Originally introduced by DuPont in 1967, solid surface countertops are an improvement from laminate countertops. This is because it’s homogeneous, making the countertops more durable. Conversely, for laminate countertops, it one part of it fails, the whole thing does.
Considerations
Even though they mimic other stone countertops, because they are man-made, you will still be able to tell the difference. If this is not a big issue for you, then there are a few benefits that means solid surface countertops may be the perfect choice.
The cost of solid surface countertops varies between the different manufacturers. That being said, these countertops typically cost more than laminate. But, they are more affordable than natural stone or engineered quartz.
Pros
These kitchen countertops are nonporous and low maintenance when it comes to cleaning. While it is a durable work surface, it is softer and easier to scratch than other countertop materials. You can sand and buff out minor scratches. Also, more significant damage can be repaired with a seamless patch.
